Gifts of Real Estate
(Gift illustration)

How it works

In consultation with the WVU Foundation, you deed your home, a commercial building, or investment property to the West Virginia University Foundation.

In a few situations, the WVU Foundation may use the property for its own purposes. With most properties, the Foundation will sell it and use the proceeds for our programs to benefit WVU, Potomac State College of WVU, the Mountaineer Athletic Club or West Virginia 4-H.

Benefits

  • You receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the real estate, no matter what you originally paid for it.
  • You pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.
  • You can direct the proceeds from your gift to a specific West Virginia University program.
  • You may specify that your gift can create a permanent endowment fund with the WVU Foundation.
